Kari stared at Ken’s face. He looked sweet and caring as always. She felt an urge to give him a big bear hug. Only the fear of hurting him stopped her. A few hours ago, she had felt so lost, felt so much pain at the thought of losing him, and yet, as she looked into his eyes, all she felt was her knees go weak, felt her hands shaking, and felt her heart pounding until she felt it would burst out of her chest. As Ken and Davis talked, (actually, Davis was trying not to cry as he blubbered that he had been scared of losing Ken and that it Ken was an idiot for doing something so stupid) Kari stood there, not knowing what to do.
Finally, when Davis announced that he had to go to the bathroom, Kari panicked. Desperate, random thoughts went through her head. What am I gonna say? I don’t want to remind him of the accident, that might inflict pain… should I tell him how I feel about him? But what if he rejects me? Or what if he forces himself to say he likes me too when he truly doesn’t? He might because he’s so kind and compassionate…. Oh my god I’m nuts! Just tell him how glad you are that he’s alive! Duh! The guy almost died for heavens sake! No I can’t face him and talk to him like nothing happened! I’m gonna go craaaaaazzzyyy!
She was just about to blurt out that she had to go to the bathroom too, when Ken gently laid his hand on hers. She felt electricity zap her whole body. “Kari, I’m glad you’re okay,” Ken said quietly. Kari’s knees felt weak. Ken smiled. That did it. Kari’s knees gave. She crumpled to the floor. “Kari!” shouted a shocked Ken. Ken sat up abruptly without thinking. “Ugh!” he yelled, as a million different kinds of pain went ripped through his body. Kari jumped up. “Ken! Are you okay?!” she gasped. “I..I’m fi..ne” Ken managed to say. “Are you sure you’re all right?” she said. “I’m just fine Kari, don’t worry” Ken said breathlessly. Kari bit her lip. After a few moments of silence while Ken regained his strength, she spoke up. “Uh… Ken, I wanted to thank you for what you did for me.” She said quietly. Ken looked at her for a moment and grinned.”What else would I do? I care for you a lot Kari.” He simply said. Kari managed a small smile. They stared at each other, scarcely believing they were all alone. Now’s the time to confess, they thought at the same time. “Kari,” Ken said as Kari said “Ken..” They both blushed. “You go first,” they said together. Kari giggled and said “No you first.” After a few seconds of silence, Ken took a deep breath. Kari leaned forward…… then the door burst open and Davis, T.K. , Yolei, and Cody burst in. Kari and Ken quickly turned away from each other.
Their friends had brought Ken some stuff, like his favorite books, framed pictures of his friends and family, favorite snacks, and drinks. Ken laughed as he said to his friends, “I could tell you guys are not gonna leave me alone the whole time I’m in this hospital” he said jokingly. Yolei giggled and said, “Of course! Who else would keep you company!” and the group laughed. Ken smiled to himself as his friends began to joke around. Now that the tension was over, they could be happy again. Ken sighed happily. I’m lucky to have friends like these, he thought to himself.
